Very nice article. I agree, Ai is just a tool, not an intelligent entity. Tools and just about everything else can be used for good or for bad according to the agenda of the user.
I think sometimes a bit of over vigilance is necessary to ensure that a potential danger is properly recognised and taken seriously. Alot of times potential dangers are swept under the rug or pushed forward, until it’s almost too late- an example is climate change, another is the state of manufacturing in the US.
Do I think AI is the end of humanity as we know it? Probably not. Do I think that it’ll bring about massive changes like previous revolutionary innovations, absolutely. However, there is one difference-previous revolutions such as mechanisation, automation, computerisation took away certain tasks but didn’t destroy jobs as a whole because it reduced monotonous tasks allowing us to do higher level work and increase productivity. But AI is slightly different because it replaces higher level work and potentially whole sectors of jobs. Im not sure companies are replacing those jobs with other types of jobs. I think companies can effectively just run leaner with AI. You probably just need those middle aged workers to manage AI and ensure the output is correct and fewer fresh grads. But I think at this point in time when population growth is declining, this maybe a good thing.
I guess what I’m saying is I’m not sure whether AI will be destructive or not or what kind of regulations are required. However, I am certain that it’s not a phase and whether we like it or not, it will be an increasing part of our world and we better learn how to use and manipulate it.
Great article, James, thank you. I feel 25% saner after reading it.

Nuance is always in short supply in human conversations, but abundant in the real circumstances in which we live.
